The College of Education at the University of Northern Iowa seeks a visionary scholar and leader to serve as Director of the Jacobson Center for Comprehensive Literacy (JCCL). The Director of the JCCL will promote and expand the College’s long-standing commitment to working with faculty within the College and across campus, preK-12 schools, and community partners, in building and supporting efforts toward comprehensive literacy education. The JCCL Director will support faculty in attracting significant external funds that foster the development of comprehensive literacy initiatives and innovations, research and dissemination, and elevate the national reputation of the University through the Center’s mission of promoting the comprehensive literacy of all learners. The Director will have the opportunity to help shape the direction of this dynamic and innovative Center as it expands its outreach of comprehensive literacy within schools and the community. Part of the Director’s role will be to mentor junior faculty, work with doctoral students, and collaborate with mid-career and senior faculty engaged in university and community partnership research. As a faculty member, the Director is also expected to teach, conduct research, and perform service activities within their field of study.
The JCCL’s mission is to promote comprehensive literacy of all learners by transforming literacy education through expanding preservice and in-service teachers’ literacy knowledge and instructional expertise in professional learning communities. The goals of the JCL are to increase the number of students who are proficient in reading and writing and to close the achievement gap between diverse groups, while accelerating literacy learning for all students. This is an exciting time for the JCCL as it affords opportunities to forge new innovations toward supporting professional development based on effective literacy instruction practices and current reading research, to assist teachers to collaborate in planning to meet the instructional needs of all students, and to involve preservice teachers in authentic teaching and learning experiences in the school setting, including shared professional development opportunities with in-service teachers.
UNI has a bold vision that we will be a diverse and inclusive campus community that provides an engaged education empowering students to lead locally and globally. We seek faculty across disciplines, departments, and colleges to work together to build our national prominence in any of four distinct but interrelated areas of our vision and strategic plan: engaged learning, diversity and inclusion, sustainability, and community engagement.
