MIAMI GARDENS, FLA -- Working families, Florida women, and Democrats all agree:: Kendrick Meek is the best candidate for U.S. Senate. In their words, Kendrick is a "longtime supporter of Florida's working families," has a "consistent and unapologetic record," is a "passionate advocate for women's rights," and is "the only candidate for women in this race." Kendrick Meek is the "right person to represent Florida in the U.S. Senate."
"It is important to stress that the overwhelming majority of Florida's union members strongly support Kendrick and are committed to giving their time and energy to make sure he is the next Senator from the great state of Florida. He is a long-time supporter of Florida's working families and has the strong record to prove it. The vast majority of Florida's union members know that all too well," said Mike Williams, President of the Florida AFL-CIO, the state federation of over 550 local unions representing 500,000 workers, retirees and their families.
"SEIU Florida was the first organization to endorse Kendrick Meek's bid for the U.S. Senate because of his consistent and unapologetic record of standing with working families, despite the political risks. Hundreds of our members engaged in grassroots efforts across the state to support Kendrick at phone banks, canvasses, worksite visits and rallies and thousands more made voluntary contributions to our Political Action Fund to ensure that Kendrick and other working families champions had the resources to wage successful campaigns versus well financed opponents," said Monica Russo, SEIU Florida State Council President and Executive Vice President of 1199 SEIU.
"Kendrick Meek is the only candidate for women in this race. The fight for equality and women's rights have been causes central to Kendrick's life," said NOW/PAC Chair Terry O'Neill. "He has always fought to protect a woman's right to choose and promote equal pay for equal work. He is running against two lifelong Republicans who represent a step backward for women, including a political opportunist who proactively opposed the Equal Rights Amendment in Florida. Kendrick will be a strong advocate for women in the U.S. Senate; he is the only choice for feminist voters in November."
"Last night, Florida voters spoke loud and clear and nominated a true champion for women's reproductive health care," said Stephanie Kunkel, executive director of the Florida Alliance of Planned Parenthood Affiliates. "Rep. Meek is a passionate advocate for women's rights, and has a long and consistent record of standing up for women's health care. As a U.S. senator, he will continue to fight to improve access to high quality health care for women, and protect a woman's right to choose."
"Congratulations to Rep. Meek for his victory in yesterday's primary. He is absolutely the right person to represent Florida in the Senate," said Michael B. Keegan, President of People for the American Way Voters Alliance. "In his eight years in the House of Representatives, Rep. Meek has been a strong advocate for voting rights, public education, and America's workers, and an uncompromising supporter of a woman's right to choose. He will serve the people of Florida well in the United States Senate."
