The Media Area NAACP along with the Cheyney Campus Chapter NAACP and the Media Fellowship House will sponsor the annual NAACP Jubilee Day celebration on Sunday, February 12, 2017. The event will be held at Cheyney University from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm in the Marcus Foster Student Union Alumni Building's 2nd floor Auditorium.
“We are especially excited to hold this event on the founding date of the NAACP (1909) which is also the actual birthday of Abraham Lincoln,” shared James Mason, the newly elected president of the Media Area NAACP. “We are also delighted to be partnering with the Cheyney Campus Chapter NAACP and the Media Fellowship House,” Mason.
Cheyney University, the first institution in the United States established for the higher education of African Americans, emerged out of the historic Institute for Colored Youth that was established by the Quaker philanthropist, Richard Humphreys, in 1837. The Media Fellowship House was founded in 1944 and has a mission to build a community free of injustice through programs for social change.
“Jubilee Day commemorates President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation as well as the actual end of slavery in the United State under the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution and the passing of the 14th and 15th Amendments which granted citizenship and the franchise to African American men,” stated Dr. Joan Duvall-Flynn, past president of Media NAACP and this year’s coordinator for Jubilee Day. “The community is invited and we hope that, as has been in the past, they will participate.”
Admission to Jubilee Day is free and the event is open to the public. Members of the community are welcomed and encouraged to participate in this celebration. To do so, bring a song, a poem, a historic document or memory significant to the occasion and plan to present it during the program.
