In an attempt to get the community involved with other athletics program, Alcorn State University’s Lady Braves softball and women’s tennis teams plan to showcase their talents in one of the University’s neighboring cities.
The Lady Braves softball team will host their season opener and doubleheader against Kentucky State Thursday, Feb. 16 at Vicksburg High School’s softball field, located on Army Navy Drive, at 5:30 p.m.
Tickets for Alcorn and Vicksburg High School students with valid school IDs will be free, so come out and enjoy the Lady Braves as they kickoff their season! The first 100 fans will receive a multi-sport poster displaying the Braves baseball and Lady Braves softball full home schedules.
Lady Braves Head Coach Josef Rankin thanks those in Vicksburg who made the event possible. He said that the support will be a motivating factor in the team’s success.
“We appreciate Mayor George Flaggs Jr., the city of Vicksburg, athletic director Preston Nailor, coach Brian Ellis ad Vicksburg high School for giving us the opportunity to play at their venue,” said Rankin. “Support is very important to these young ladies. Sometimes, they just want to see that someone cares, and I believe this game is a great opportunity to show that. They have been working hard and are ready to go play.”
Rankin, the 2016 Southwestern Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, and the Lady Braves improved from 2-31 (0-14 SWAC) in 2015 to 18-28 (11-6 SWAC) record and third-place finish in last year’s SWAC Tournament.
More action will follow Friday, Feb. 17 when Alcorn’s women’s tennis team face Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College and the University of Central Arkansas Saturday, Feb. 18 at the Halls Ferry Road Tennis Courts, located at 1264 South Frontage Road, at 1 p.m.
Head Tennis Coach Anthony Dodgen was also named the 2016 Coach of the Year after the team defeated Jackson State University 4-2 in the SWAC Tournament to capture the program’s fourth women’s championship.
