Broadway National Theatre Director's Fellowship Awarded to ASU Graduate! (961 hits)

His18-month Broadway residency at NYC's Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center begins in July

One of Dean Tommie "Tonea" Stewart's Alabama State University theater protege's and ASU graduates is moving up to the big-time in New York City's Broadway theater scene.

ASU alumnus LoRondo "LA" Williams is one of five emerging directors selected to participate in the 2017-18 National Directors Fellowship.

The program is sponsored by the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, National New Play Network (NNPN), Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, and Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation.

“It's a great privilege to be taking this crucial step forward in my career,” said Williams. “My goal is to bring my authentic voice to the national conversation on new plays and create a few career-long collaborative partnerships along the way.”

During the fellowship, Williams will embark on an 18-month residency at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center in July, with workshops and professional development opportunities throughout the year. He also will travel the country, meet playwrights, and direct a main stage production at an NNPN member theater.

Williams, who is a director based in New York, serves on the Encores! Off-Center Artist Board at New York City Center and is a member of the Lincoln Center Theater Directors Lab. He also is the founding artistic director of the Black Directors Studio, and has worked with the Public Theatre, National Black Theatre, Baltimore Center Stage, and Brooklyn Art Exchange.
