Lovelace, a graduating senior, topped 14 other contestants from Historically Black Colleges and Universities to claim the title. His win included a $1,500 scholarship and a trophy.

Lincoln’s Dean of Administration and Student Affairs Jerome Offord Jr., congratulated all the contestants the men in a letter dated Feb. 1 "for making it this far in your journey toward leadership." He emphasized they were present because "your peers see something in you that set you apart from other young men.
