Alabama State University Staffer to Speak at NCAA Conference is Known Nationally for Athletic Expertise (2217 hits)

As the associate athletic director for academics at Alabama State University, Dr. Ron Brown has a nationwide reputation for his acumen and expertise in a myriad of athletic-related topics. It is that reputation which was the catalyst for his invitation to speak before the venerable National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Accelerating Academic Success Program (AASP) Conference that is being held in Orlando, Florida on July 24-25.

Brown said it is important to pass-on the knowledge that he has obtained over a lifetime in collegiate athletics so that similar programs may do better.

“I am always excited to share from the experiences I have had in higher education,” Brown said. “It is an honor to be recognized by one’s peers as someone with something relevant to contribute to the field and work that we do.”

Brown, a national expert in his area, will join other presenters to discuss “Cross-Campus Relationships and Creative Institutional Solutions for Student-Athlete Support Services,” a topic that brings attention to creative ways in which to fund student-athlete support services at schools with limited resources.

“Division's I, II and III of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, and junior and community college athletic programs at institutions with enrollments at less than 10,000 are stressed to invest in a quality student-athlete development experience,” Brown said.

The two-day national conference is specifically targeted for limited resource institutions and will be attended by presidents, athletic department staff and practitioners in the field of student support services.

Committed to positioning ASU at the forefront of innovation in higher education, Brown has a dual reporting relationship in ASU's Division of Academic Affairs and Department of Athletics. He oversees ASU’s Student-Athlete Support Services program, whose primary charge is to manage activities and services designed to positively impact several areas: retention and the graduation success rate (GSR) and Academic Performance Rate (APR) scores of all of Alabama State's 18 sports, which compete for championships at the NCAA Division I level.

Brown and his staff have been critical to the success of ASU’s athletic program. Last year marked the first time that all 18 sports met the NCAA APR standard of a 930 or higher.

BROWN HOLDS MANY HONORS
Dr. Brown is the former president of the National Association of Athletic Academic Advisors (N4A), and a recipient of the N4A’s Distinguished Service Award. Prior to joining ASU in March 2011, he served in a similar capacity at the University of Pittsburgh and at Oklahoma State University.

“What has been unique for me is having been privy to fiscal management, operations, staffing and management of resources across the board in colleges and universities,” Brown said. “In the past seven years at ASU, I have been involved in student affairs, retention initiatives, athletics and academic affairs.”
