SPLC's Book Talk on Dr. King's Bio. Features Alabama State University's Dr. Derryn Moten (1036 hits)

WHEN: Oct. 4, at 6 p.m.
WHERE: The Southern Poverty Law Center, Montgomery, Ala.

The Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery will host a “Book Talk” on Thursday, Oct. 4, at 6 p.m. The event will feature Dr. Derryn Moten, chairman of Alabama State University's Department of History & Political Science, who will discuss “Crusader Without Violence,” which was first published in 1959 by Lawrence Red****.

It is free and open to the public.

This 60th anniversary edition of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s biography has been re- released with a new introduction authored by Moten, who puts Red****’s biography of King into context, updates Red****’s life after he was forced to leave his teaching position in Montgomery, and explains why “Crusader Without Violence” —notwithstanding the hundreds of books published on King’s life since this one— remains a significant historical document.

Moten chairs the department at ASU that was formerly the department of history that Red**** chaired from 1955 until 1960. He is a local co-president for the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) Faculty-Staff Alliance and is vice chair of the AFT Higher Education Policy and Planning Council. He also is a vice president for the Alabama AFL-CIO.

The Book Talk is sponsored by ASU’s Department of History & Political Science and New South Books.
