UDC Students Land Fortune 500 Jobs and Internships (4393 hits)

Fourteen UDC students and five UDC staff members from the Division of Student Development and Success, including the Office of Career Services, attended the Thurgood Marshall College Fund’s 2018 Leadership Institute October 26-30, at the Washington Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC.

At this event, UDC students secured on-the-spot offers for jobs, internships, and employer leadership programs from Fortune 500 companies, including Altria, Eli Lilly and Company, Georgia Pacific, John Deere, Molex, Walmart, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, and more. Additionally, Javel Wilson, a junior studying mechanical engineering in SEAS, delivered his compelling speech at the 31st TMCF Awards Gala. This is the second year in a row that a UDC student has commanded attention for our University at this Gala, an honor bestowed on just 2 out of 400 students from the 47 represented HBCUs. Last year, Heather McNeil, a junior studying biology and psychology in CAS, amazed the audience with her heartfelt speech.

The award-winning TMCF Leadership Institute is a national program intended to develop students’ leadership skills, create a community of scholars, provide companies access to a talented and diverse student population, and help students make connections that lead to careers. This power-packed four-day conference prepares carefully selected students from the 47 publicly-supported Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to compete in today’s very competitive global workforce. The conference culminates with a recruitment fair where Fortune 500 companies, government agencies and graduate program representatives offer jobs, internships and continuing education opportunities.

These UDC students professionally represented our University and their respective colleges/schools, including the College of Arts and Sciences; College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability, and Environmental Sciences; School of Business and Public Administration; School of Engineering and Applied Sciences; and the David A. Clarke School of Law.

To attend the TMCF LI conference, UDC students participate in a rigorous application and interview selection process. After selection, students engage in career workshops over a period of several months that develop them both professionally and personally, as required by TMCF and the UDC Office of Career Services.
