Johnson C. Smith University announces the departure of STEM College Dean Hang Chen (1096 hits)

Johnson C. Smith University President Clarence D. Armbrister announced today the resignation of Dr. Hang Chen, dean of the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and James B. Duke Distinguished Associate Professor of Computer Science. Her tenure at JCSU will end on March 31, 2018.

Since joining the University in 2004, Chen has made tremendous contributions to the quality of education offered by JCSU. She has excelled as an educator, administrator and scholar and is respected for excellence and innovation in the field of higher education. Her contributions as a scholar and as a leader have been transformational in the lives of students and the life of the University.

Chen will serve as the associate provost at the University of Cincinnati, where she received her doctorate degree. JCSU looks forward to a continued professional relationship with her as she continues to innovate higher education through her work in Cincinnati.

Chen’s contributions to JCSU, particularly the growth of the computer science program, have been integral to the University’s burgeoning reputation in STEM, said President Armbrister. “Dr. Chen leaves a legacy of academic rigor that has produced market-driven STEM majors and recognition of JCSU as an institution that is leading the way in STEM education for minorities and women,” Armbrister said. “Her focus on student outcomes has resulted in our students presenting successfully at national conferences and earning prestigious internships. She will be truly missed.”

The groundwork Chen has laid through her work in the College of STEM has provided a firm foundation on which the University can continue to build. She has had a positive impact on all who have known and worked with her at JCSU. She will indeed be missed. Thank you, Dr. Chen.
