Butler Wins Individually, Aggie Men HBCU Challenge Again (2504 hits)



North Carolina A&T women’s senior G’Jasmyne Butler won her second consecutive race as she claimed first place at the Robert Shumake HBCU Challenge Saturday morning in 5k cross country action at the Wake Med Soccer Park.

As a team, the men’s cross country team claimed their fifth HBCU Challenge title in six years while the men’s cross country team won the event. The N.C. A&T women finished sixth with 163 points. Fayetteville State won it on the women’s side followed by Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State, Benedict College and Virginia State to round out the top-5.

Butler, who won last weekend at the Greensboro Cross Country Invitational and was named the MEAC women’s cross country runner of the week, finished in 18:55.2 and averaged 6:05 per mile. Butler was just three seconds away from setting a new personal record in a 5k race. She won the event by eight seconds 6:05 per mile and won by eight seconds over second place. Last season, Butler finished second at the event.

Sophomore Shalah Means finished in the top-5 with a fifth-place finish in 1948.9 for an average mile of 6:22. The other women’s results include junior Racheal Kosgei finishing 45th (23:02.4), junior Arianna Purvis crossing in 25:50.5 and Paula Salmon ending her race at 26:28.

On the men’s side, the Aggies won the event with 24 points, 19 points less than Benedict College with 43 points and had three top-5 finishers. N.C. A&T averaged 29:06 per runner.

Sophomore Regan Kimtai finished second with an 8k time of 28:32.1 for an average of 5:44 per mile. Freshman Devon Williams finished third in 28:51.1 for an average mile of 5:48.

Sophomore Morris Kimble finished fourth in 29:05.6 to give him an average mile of 5:51.
Senior Mar’Quise McGee and freshman Jordan Richardson also finished in the top-10. McGee finished in seventh place (29:32.1) and Richardson placed eighth (29:33.3). Senior Joel Freedman finished in 22nd (31:44.8).

The men’s and women’s cross country teams compete in the final regular-season meet in Kernersville, N.C., for the Vertcross Invitational, Friday.
