The National Alliance of Artists from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (NAAHBCU) will host its annual Conference and Juried Art Exhibition at Alabama State University on Friday and Saturday (Oct. 13 and 14).
The conference will be held on the second floor of the Levi Watkins Learning Center, while the exhibition will be in the Tullibody Fine Arts Center, Warren/Britt Galleries.
A reception is scheduled from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday in the Warren/Britt Galleries.
The conference and exhibit are free and open to the public.
The event, part of ASU’s sesquicentennial celebration, includes a juried show by professional and student artists from HBCUs around the country. Featured artist James Pate, a practicing full-time artist from Ohio, will have his two-dimensional works on display. Other artists’ works include paintings, original prints, ceramics, sculptures, mixed media and collages.
The exhibition runs through Nov. 10. Gallery hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
EVENTS AT THE CONFERENCE
An installation ceremony honoring five ASU alumni on the ASU “Wall of Fame Board” situated in the Tullibody Fine Arts Center. The honorees are Dr. William Colvin, retired Professor from Illinois State University and former chairperson for the Visual Arts department at ASU; Dr. Floyd Coleman, former chairperson for Howard University; William Henderson former professor of Art at ASU; John Feagin, retired school teacher in the Montgomery Public School System and a muralist; and Maestro Samuel Williams, (actor, dancer, musician and visual artist) and retired art instructor in the Atlanta Public Schools system.
Other highlights include an exhibition speaker, member’s and student member’s meetings on Friday and several presentations on Saturday in the Levi Watkins Learning Center.
"The event is all about the power of art and a tribute and honoring of Alabama State University Visual Arts Legends," said Cleve Webber, associate professor of Art and gallery directory for the Warren/Britt Galleries.
Colleges and universities participating are ASU, Fort Valley State University, Morris Brown College, Tuskegee University, Savannah State University, Winston Salem University, Fayetteville State University, Kennedy King Junior College and Tennessee State University.
