The Bureau of Air Management (BAM), Engineering Division, Air Quality Modeling and Emissions Inventory group provides air quality modeling for new emission source reviews in Connecticut, as well as emissions inventory responsibilities. Inventory responsibilities covers a wide range of engineering modeling, and estimating of emissions from all point sources, mobile sources, non-point (or area) sources, and anthropogenic sources in Connecticut.

DEEP currently has a job opportunity for an Engineer Intern within the Air Quality Modeling and Emissions Inventory unit, located in Hartford.

POSITION DETAILS
Engineer Interns receive training under the direction of a supervisor and senior staff for a period of one year, before being promoted to Air Pollution Control Engineer 1 upon successful completion of the training period.

These positions provide unique opportunities to join a team committed to developing, maintaining, and reporting all air pollution emissions in the inventory for the State of Connecticut, as well as processing all modeling of the impacts of any new sources of air pollution in Connecticut.

This is a full-time position. Schedule is Monday-Friday, 35 hours per week on first shift, with opportunities for hybrid work offered.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for receiving training in introductory professional engineering work for the development of technical and professional engineering skills and knowledge in order to qualify for advancement to the technical engineering work of the agency.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs a wide variety of increasingly difficult duties as technical skills are acquired during course of training period.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

General knowledge of basic engineering theories, principles and methods; skill in use of drafting and calculating instruments; considerable ability in performing mathematical computations, making neat and accurate drawings and preparing minor design and structural details; ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

A Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in applied mathematics, physical or biological sciences, engineering, meteorology, public health or statistics.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience or academic coursework in sources of air pollution and air pollution control technologies.
  • Experience interpreting and applying air pollution control laws of Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
  • Experience or academic coursework in meteorology, weather science, or any modeling associated with these areas.
  • Experience using oral and written communication to present engineering information to audiences of various sizes and levels of environmental subject matter expertise.
  • Experience or academic coursework gathering, organizing, and analyzing datasets using spreadsheets and database applications.
