Engineer Interns receive training under the direction of a supervisor and senior staff for a period of one year, before being promoted to Air Pollution Control Engineer 1 upon successful completion of the training period.

POSITIONS DETAILS
This is a full-time, 35 hour per week position. Schedule is Monday-Friday on first shift.

This position will be located within the Planning & Standards Division's Air Monitoring Group at 9 Windsor Ave., Windsor, CT.

The Air Monitoring Group is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the state’s ambient air quality monitoring network. This network provides scientifically valid data on air pollutant levels in Connecticut’s ambient air and this data informs many policy decisions on both the state and national levels. The Bureau of Air Management maintains the most comprehensive monitoring network in New England for measuring air quality. The bureau regulates the use, transportation and storage of radioactive materials and monitors for radioactive accumulations from nuclear power plants; develops and implements regulations, policies, procedures and standards for carrying out Connecticut’s air and radiation control laws and regulations; issues air pollution control permits and enforces laws or regulations when they are violated.

The Planning & Standards Division's Air Monitoring Group monitors air quality to protect public health and the environment. The monitoring of air quality data is crucial to determine compliance with the Federal air quality standards and to evaluate how well pollution control and abatement strategies are working to clean the air.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for receiving training in introductory professional engineering work for the development of technical and professional engineering skills and knowledge in order to qualify for advancement to the technical engineering work of the agency.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to: 
  • Prepare air quality data to be reported to the federal government;
  • Compile data for analysis to determine air pollution monitor performance;
  • Validate data by analyzing data reports and graphs and site computer acquired air quality information;
  • Assist in maintaining and repairing air quality instrumentation and equipment;
  • Assist in the implementation and maintenance of the computerized environmental information system;
  • Assist in establishing community-based air quality monitoring programs;
  • Assist in developing and administering a low-cost air sensor program;
  • Assist in conducting public outreach and participating in air quality workshops;
  • Assist in conducting and performing analysis of data for special purpose monitoring;
  • Review air pollution data for validity, maintain records of work performed and supplies used;
  • Assist in updating and making recommendations for routine quality control procedures used for installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of air pollution monitoring equipment;
  • Attend classroom training, workshops or seminars to maintain and grow knowledge of the latest technology, information, research, within the field of air monitoring;
  • May assist in acceptance testing of new equipment and preparing report on findings;
  • May assist in preparing memorandum and correspondence as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

General knowledge of basic engineering theories, principles and methods; skill in use of drafting and calculating instruments; considerable ability in performing mathematical computations, making neat and accurate drawings and preparing minor design and structural details; ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

A Bachelor's and/or Master's degree in applied mathematics, physical or biological sciences, engineering, meteorology, public health or statistics.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with installing, servicing, repairing, or maintaining any type of electronic equipment;
  • Experience with operating and maintaining instrumentation used to measure air pollutant and meteorological concentrations or conditions;
  • Experience conducting public outreach;
  • Experience communicating technical information to technical and non-technical audiences;
  • Experience reading and interpreting schematics, diagrams, and service manuals;
  • Experience summarizing information, preparing reports and making recommendations based on findings;
  • Experience setting priorities and meeting deadlines; and
  • Experience with personal computers and word processing and spreadsheet programs.
