Job Summary
Job Summary
The Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education Specialist position exists to provide educational consultation, project management, and program development to implement a statewide, multi-organizational educational plan for students who are deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing (D/DB/HH).
The statewide education plan that is a major focus of this position is the Minnesota Collaborative Plan for Maximizing and Monitoring Learner Progress for Children who are Deaf, Deafblind and Hard of Hearing and their families. This "Collaborative Plan" seeks to create statewide, systemic change in how D/DB/HH students are educated; therefore the person in this position works across Collaborative Plan participants and stakeholders, including administrators, teachers, state-level agencies, statewide advocacy, and educational organizations, consumer organizations, parents, students, and many others. Implementation of the Collaborative Plan involves highly-sensitive, highly-visible policies and impacts.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
Must meet the following education and experience qualifications listed below:
•Master’s degree in Deaf and Hard of Hearing education and Deaf and Hard of Hearing license; AND
•Three (3) years of experience in an education setting.
Experience must demonstrate the following:
•Developing or conducting educational programs for children who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, deafblind or who have multiple disabilities;
•Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL);
•Writing in English in publicly distributed articles or reports
•Testifying at public hearings;
•Developing educational materials for a variety of mediums, such as websites, journals, or legislative reports or legislators and journals; and
•Knowledge of state or federal resources, agencies, or public/private organizations that provide services to children who are deaf and hard of hearing.
Preferred Qualifications:
•Human relations sufficient to lead, motivate and persuade cross agency staff in resolving programs while understanding opposing views, competing relations, and local vs. state control issues.
•Knowledge of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention systems in Minnesota and goals set by the Joint Commission on Infant Hearing.
