As an Evidence Technician you will provide authoritative and interpretive assistance and advice to the field office and other FBI, federal, state, and local law enforcement personnel regarding the legal handling of evidence matters.  You will be responsible for the proper secure handling of all evidence acquired by the field office.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is looking for Evidence Technicians for all 56 FBI Field Offices, and their Resident Agencies.

FBI Field Offices

The FBI has 56 field offices (falling within a Division of the same name) centrally located in major metropolitan areas across the U.S. and Puerto Rico.  They are places where the Bureau carries out its investigations, assesses local and regional crime threats, and works closely with partners on cases and operations.  Each field office is overseen by a Special Agent in Charge, except for the offices in Los Angeles, New York City, and Washington D.C., which are headed by an Assistant Director in Charge due to their large size.

Within these field offices are a total of about 380 Resident Agencies located in smaller cities and towns.  Resident Agencies are managed by Supervisory Special Agents.​

Salary & Benefits:

GS-05:  $30,113.00 - $39,149.00

GS-06:  $33,567.00 - $43,638.00

GS-07:  $37,301.00 - $48,488.00

GS-08:  $41,310.00 - $53,703.00

GS-09:  $45,627.00 - $59,316.00

NOTE: The salaries listed above are the Base rate of pay for federal employees on the General Schedule (GS) pay scale.  A complete list of Pay Tables factoring in locality pay (based on the geographical area) can be found on OPM.gov.

Major Duties

As an Evidence Technician you will:

  • Provide extensive advice, guidance, and training for the Special Agents (SAs) and Professional Staff on all aspects of evidence processing and procedures including search, protocol, evidence packaging, and proper completion of paperwork.
  • Provide FBI policy to other agencies regarding packaging, maintenance and storage of evidence to assist in the development of their evidence program or for coordinative purposes.
  • Serve on the Evidence Response Team in multi-agency task force and other cases and provide crime scene assistance.
  • Testify in a court of law concerning the security and chain-of-custody of evidence.
  • Responsible for the receipt, retention and disposition of evidence for the field office, which includes all items seized, recovered or contributed properties which are expected to be introduced in court and/or subject to chain-of-custody attack, regardless of size as collected by (SAs) and other law enforcement personnel, ensuring it is appropriately collected, documented and stored.
  • Handle HAZMAT evidence.
  • Responsible for the security aspects of the Evidence Control Room (ECR) including safe combinations and secure areas, and personnel traffic to and from ECR locations.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants can qualify for GS level based on Specialized Experience (SE), Education, or a combination of both as outlined below.

Your application will be evaluated for SE and/or Education, compared to your responses to the online assessment questionnaire, and will be used to determine whether you meet the qualification requirements for each GS level. If you meet all qualification requirements, and are deemed Competitive, you will be referred to respective hiring managers for further consideration. Self-assessment that is not supported by information in your resume, and/or supporting documents, will eliminate you from Competitive status.

Specialized Experience (SE)

In order for you to qualify based on SE alone, you must possess the SE below for the various GS levels. Please ensure all SE can be identified in your resume.

GS-05: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of SE equivalent to the GS-04 grade level, as defined below:

  • Maintained records
  • Used a variety of software applications
  • Prepared written documents

GS-06: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of SE equivalent to the GS-05 grade level, as defined below:

  • Inventoried, cataloged, stored, and packaged a variety of materials
  • Maintained records
  • Prepared written documents
  • Used automated systems to maintain data history

GS-07: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of SE equivalent to the GS-06 grade level, as defined below:

  • Inventoried, cataloged, stored, and packaged a variety of materials
  • Processed forms, paperwork, and authorizations in accordance with regulations/policy
  • Resolved discrepancies, conflicts, or other problems related to inventory requirements
  • Provided advice on policies and procedures to internal and external contacts while maintaining effective working relationships
  • Maintained liaison within and outside the organization

GS-08: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of SE equivalent to the GS-07 grade level, as defined below:

  • Inventoried, cataloged, stored, and packaged a variety of materials
  • Processed forms, paperwork, and authorizations in accordance with regulations/policy
  • Resolved discrepancies, conflicts, or other problems related to inventory requirements
  • Maintained liaison within and outside the organization
  • Evaluated programs to ensure compliance with existing policies and procedures

GS-09: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of SE equivalent to the GS-08 grade level, as defined below:

  • Inventoried, cataloged, properly stored, and packaged a variety of material
  • Handled, stored, wrapped, packaged, and shipped all types of evidence and hazardous materials
  • Established automated history of materials using a database to ensure tracking and location
  • Maintained liaison within and outside the organization
  • Evaluated programs to ensure compliance with existing policies and procedures
  • Provided extensive advice, guidance, and training on all aspects of evidence processing and procedures

Education
Education may be substituted for SE, and all degrees must be from an accredited college or university. Transcripts are required when qualifying based on education.

GS-05: Applicant must have four (4) years of education above high school.

GS-06: Applicant must have a bachelor’s degree.

GS-07: Applicant must have a bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement of a GPA of 3.0 or higher as recorded on an official transcript, or one (1) full year of graduate level education.

Education cannot be substituted for SE at the GS-08 or GS-09 levels.

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above requirements provided you can show foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.

  • The FBI is in the Executive Branch of the federal government. It is one of the components of the Department of Justice (DOJ). The FBI is the principle investigative arm of the DOJ. All FBI positions are in the excepted service.

HRD will waive this limited movement policy for qualified employees, who have received an official notification letter that their current position is being reassigned to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama by 2021, so those employees can compete for a position elsewhere.
