As a Threat Intake Examiner you will communicate with callers to determine the scope and severity of the problem being reported, ensuring any pertinent information is forwarded on to the appropriate source.  In this position you will utilize a variety of law enforcement databases to research and verify any reported threats, and work alongside Special Agent personnel to determine appropriate follow-up action to information being received.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is looking for Threat Intake Examiners to fill multiple vacancies in the Clarksburg, WV area.  Please see below for more information about the division and section where this position serves.

Science and Technology Branch (STB)

The mission of the Science and Technology Branch is to use science and technology to enhance operations and investigations. STB is home to the following Division(s):

Criminal Justice Information Services Division (CJISD): The mission of the Division is to equip our partners with the criminal justice information they need to protect the United States while protecting civil liberties. Originally established in 1924 as the Identification Division, today the CJIS Division manages several programs that involve sharing information with law enforcement partners, supporting over 18,000 law enforcement agencies. CJISD is located in Clarksburg, WV.

National Threat Operations Section (NTOS):  The Threat Intake Examiner serves within the National Threat Operations Center (NTOC), which operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, providing an around-the-clock mechanism for the FBI to receive potentially critical information, evaluate it, and take appropriate action. In threat-to-life situations, the NTOC immediately coordinates with state and local law enforcement partners.  In addition, the NTOC examines and processes information provided by the public for FBI investigative and intelligence purposes and reports the information to the appropriate field office (FO).

Working Hours:  Various shift assignments to support 24x7x365 operations; possible assignment to day, mid-day, night, adjoining/odd hour, and weekend shifts.

This position is designated as "emergency." As an "emergency" employee, you may be expected to report to work during periods of adverse weather conditions or other types of emergency situations when it is announced that an "unscheduled leave policy" is in effect or that federal agencies are closed in your immediate vicinity.

Salary & Benefits

GS 05:  $34,916.00 - $45,393.00

GS 06   $38,921.00 - $50,598.00

GS 07:  $43,251.00 - $56,222.00

GS 08:  $47,899.00 - $62,269.00

Key Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be able to obtain a Top Secret (TS) clearance.
  • As part of the interview process for this position candidates will participate in and be scored on their responses to a simulated scenario involving an incoming call.

Major Duties

As a Threat Intake Examiner you will:

  • Receive, evaluate, and disseminate information pertaining to a variety of situations including criminal activity, potential and actual emergencies, and national security situations.
  • Provide investigative support to FBI field offices as well as other government agencies by conducting database searches and evaluating information received telephonically and/or through electronic submissions from the general public.
  • Search defined sources such as FBI and open-source databases, social media platforms, and criminal records to assist Special Agents and Intelligence Analysts on investigative case work.
  • Interpret data regarding a particular subject and evaluates the information to assist in compiling a profile of the subject matter.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and prepare and issue investigative reports related to terrorism, investment fraud, kidnapping, bomb threats, hijackings, school shootings, bank robberies, etc.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants can qualify for specific GS levels based on Specialized Experience (SE), Education, or a combination of both as outlined below.

Your application will be evaluated for SE and/or Education, compared to your responses to the online assessment questionnaire, and will be used to determine whether you meet the qualification requirements for each GS level. If you meet all qualification requirements, and are deemed Competitive, you will be referred for further consideration. Self-assessment that is not supported by information in your resume, and/or supporting documents, will eliminate you from Competitive status.

SE Requirements

In order for you to qualify based on SE alone, you must possess the SE listed below in order to qualify for the various grade levels. Please ensure all SE can be identified in your resume.

GS 05: Applicant must possess at least one (1) year of SE equivalent to the GS-04 grade level, as defined below:

  • Received, evaluated, and appropriately responded to a variety of customer requests.
  • Orally communicated with customers to identify and assess the scope of a specific request or need.
  • Adjusted or adapted problem solving techniques to answer specific or unexpected customer needs.
  • Performed routine analysis of information to develop conclusions.

GS 06: In addition to the above, applicant must possess at least one (1) year of SE equivalent to the GS 05 level, as defined below:

  • Utilized communication and analytical techniques to evaluate and answer customer inquiries; asking probative questions to obtain additional information.
  • Orally communicated to exchange information with a diverse array of individuals, adapting communication techniques and determining appropriate action for specific situations.
  • Queried databases or other information outlets to conduct research on a specific subject.
  • Analyzed and evaluated information to make decisions.

GS 07:  In addition to the above, applicant must possess at least one (1) year of SE equivalent to the GS 06 level, as defined below:

  • Orally communicated with customers to obtain, exchange, interview, relay or verify information.
  • Manipulated automated information systems to query, retrieve, enter, and modify data.
  • Created and maintained records and files in accordance with records management procedures.
  • Addressed a variety of conventional problems, questions, or situations in conformance with established criteria.

GS 08:  In addition to the above, applicant must possess at least one (1) year of SE equivalent to the GS 07 level, as defined below:

  • Orally communicated with customers to gather pertinent information, provide guidance, and resolve threatening and/or routine problems.
  • Utilized automated systems to collect, process, and evaluate data to identify patterns of activity.
  • Evaluated the significance, validity, and relevance of data in support of investigative case work.
  • Prepared and issued investigative reports in accordance with policies and procedures.


    Education may be substituted for SE, and all degrees must be from an accredited college or university. Transcripts are required when qualifying based on education.

    GS-05: Applicant must have at least four (4) years of education above the high school level. One year of full time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours (or the equivalent in a college or university), or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school.

    GS 06:  Applicant must have a bachelor’s degree.

    GS 07:  Applicant must have a bachelor’s degree with superior academic achievement or one (1) full year of graduate level education. Superior academic achievement is the completion of all the requirements of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, which is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average of 3.0 or higher as recorded on an official transcript, or as based on courses completed during the final two years of the curriculum, or (3) honor society membership.

    GS 08:  Education may not be substituted for specialized experience at this grade level.

    Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above requirements provided you can show foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.

    Additional Information

    • The FBI is in the Executive Branch of the federal government. It is one of the components of the Department of Justice (DOJ). The FBI is the principle investigative arm of the DOJ. All FBI positions are in the excepted service.

This policy is waived for qualified personnel permanently assigned to Divisions identified to relocate to Huntsville, Alabama.
    • Memorandum of Understanding: Work performed outside assigned duties (that would not normally be documented on an SF-50, i. e., back-up duties), has to be documented in detail by an immediate supervisor in order to receive full credit for amount of time worked in that position. If no documentation is furnished no credit will be given for time worked in that position. The following notations must be specified in the documentation (Memorandum of Understanding):

    a. Percent of time worked in the particular position (cannot conflict with main duties)
    b. The month/year work began
    c. Frequency worked (i.e., daily, monthly, etc.)
    d. Specific duties performed
