Organizational Unit Overview
The Division of Health Sciences is the largest and most complex division within the University, employing more than 900 EHRA employees and 1,700 SHRA employees. The Division is composed of numerous Centers, Institutes, and agencies such as East Carolina Heart Institute and Eastern Area Health Education Center, the Colleges of Allied Health Sciences, Nursing, the Brody School of Medicine, the School of Dental Medicine, and the Laupus Health Science Library. In addition to the Academic and Administrative responsibilities of the division, the four professional schools provide clinical services throughout eastern North Carolina in a variety of settings and venues.


The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Assistant Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Educational Support and Faculty Development, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Executive Director for Business and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences and Research.


Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. In order to operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed.


Job Duties
The Director of Program Planning, Implementation and Assessment provides leadership and management of a variety of services to meet program planning, implementation, assessment, and reporting needs in order to extend the benefits of the educational, research, and service activities that support the SoDM mission.


This position oversees and directs plans for multiple interrelated projects that are integral to the School of Dental Medicine. The position will ultimately report to the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs but will report to the Vice Dean on an interim basis, until the successful completion of the CODA site visit for the pre-doctoral program in Spring 2022.


Specific Duties Include:



  • Assuming a leadership role in developing reports and documentation required to ensure ongoing compliance with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) accreditation standards.

  • Responding to local and national requests for information and documentation about the ECU School of Dental Medicine’s educational programs from such agencies as the American Dental Association (ADA), the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), and the ECU Office of Institutional Planning, Assessment, and Research (IPAR).

  • Actively participating in the ongoing strategic planning process for the SoDM, analyzing information related to program strategies, objectives, outcomes, and budget and making recommendations/projections to SoDM administration; assuring appropriate linkages with both the Health Science Division and the university’s strategic plans.

  • Interacting independently and frequently with the SoDM leadership and faculty to identify and address program planning, implementation, assessment, and reporting needs.

  • Initiating and participating in collaborative grant seeking, publication, research and scholarship related to the development, implementation and assessment of new programs and strategic initiatives in order to promote the unique SoDM program and to contribute toward the advancement of education, practice and related fields.


Minimum Education/Experience



  • Master’s Degree or higher plus 3 years experience, or Bachelor’s Degree and 5 years experience experience, in a discipline related to this position for example education, public health, public policy or planning, public and/or business administration or another related field.

  • Broad knowledge of strategic planning; program development, implementation and assessment; and reporting processes.

  • Experience should be in an educational, professional or health care setting, working with the initiation, implementation, management, evaluation, and assessment of a program or programs.

  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills


Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education



  • Demonstrated knowledge of working with administration, state licensing boards, and accrediting agencies to ensure that programing supports minimum licensure and accreditation requirements.

  • Five years of experience in a health profession setting
