Position Description:
VISITING ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN HEALTH and HUMAN PERFORMANCE

The College of Charleston invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor within the Department of Health and Human Performance beginning in August 2022. The Department of Health and Human Performance (HEHP) is housed within the newly launched School of Health Sciences on the College’s urban campus, in historic downtown Charleston, South Carolina. The successful candidate will join HEHP, which offers undergraduate degrees in Exercise Science, Public Health (both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science), and Physical Education with a Concentration in Teacher Education.

Since its founding in 1770, the College of Charleston maintains a strong liberal arts curriculum. The College is a state-supported, comprehensive institution and ranks among the nation’s top universities in providing quality education in the arts, sciences, education, and business. The student body numbers approximately 11,000 students in undergraduate and graduate programs. Academic Responsibilities: As a Visiting Assistant Professor, the primary responsibility is to provide high-quality instruction in four courses per semester within the department including two sections of a 200-level course focused on muscular fitness exercise assessment and prescription. Other courses will be assigned based on the applicant’s educational background and experiences with the possibility of teaching foundations in exercise science, introduction to public health, personal and community health, principles of nutrition, epidemiology, environmental health, and biostatistics. Additional responsibilities include engaging in service activities within a program, the department, school, college, and community and working collaboratively to help meet stated program, department, and school goals and objectives. Lastly, we expect faculty to commit to and support students in their pursuit of a liberal arts and sciences undergraduate education.

Minimum Qualifications: 1) Possess an earned PhD degree in exercise science, public health or closely related discipline from an accredited institution by August 16, 2022. ABD candidates without degree completion by August 16, 2022 will be considered at the Visiting Instructor rank. 2) Have experience and/or academic qualifications to teach the EXSC 211 Neuromuscular Assessment and Exercise Prescription course that incorporates demonstration and hands on lab skills, 3) Have a record of prior experiences with teaching and mentorship.

Preferred Qualifications: Preference given to candidates showing 1) proficiency in teaching full-semester undergraduate courses, 2) evidence of dynamic and interactive teaching methods, 3) evidence of service in higher education, 4) record of mentoring students through the research process, and 5) evidence of related certifications from professional organizations (e.g. NSCA, ACSM, NASM, CEPH, NCHEC, NEHA, etc.).

Salary: The salary and benefits package is competitive and dependent on qualifications and experience.
