BACKGROUND ON THE ENVIRONMENTAL INTEGRITY PROJECT
The Environmental Integrity Project (EIP) is America’s environmental watchdog. We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting public health and our natural world by holding polluters and government agencies accountable under the law. We advocate for tough but fair environmental standards and empower communities fighting for clean air and water.

Our team of lawyers, analysts, communications staff, and engineers provide support to communities fighting David vs. Goliath battles against some of the biggest polluters in the U.S. We sue not only corporations that don’t follow the law, but also federal and state agencies when they fail to do their jobs protecting the environment.

POSITION OVERVIEW
EIP is accepting applications for an Attorney at the Staff or Senior level to join our team working to hold industrial polluters and federal and state agencies accountable for compliance with the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act. Working with EIP’s team of lawyers, analysts and engineers, the Staff or Senior Attorney will work to reduce air and water pollution from industrial sources through federal and state administrative permitting and rulemaking processes. EIP works across the United States, but this position will have a special focus on industrial sources located in Texas and Louisiana. The position will be based in Texas or Louisiana and may require occasional travel in these states or to other locations within the United States.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Develop, analyze, and execute legal strategies to reduce air and water pollution.
• Perform a range of litigation and legal tasks to support administrative advocacy and litigation efforts, including: legal research; drafting comments, complaints, motions, and briefs; and oral advocacy.
• Work with internal and external experts to develop the factual, technical, and scientific bases to support EIP’s advocacy efforts.
• Represent EIP and other organizations in federal and state litigation, administrative proceedings, and public meetings.
• Manage client relationships and work effectively within coalitions.
• Work with EIP’s communications and research teams to develop and execute communications strategies and reports.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
• An active bar membership in good standing in Texas or Louisiana (or a willingness to apply for admission to one of these bars within six months of accepting the job).
• 3+ years of legal experience and experience in environmental and/or administrative law for a Staff Attorney, or 8+ years of experience for a Senior Attorney.
• Clean Air Act and/or Clean Water Act experience.
• Excellent analytical, research, writing, organizational, oral communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Passion for protecting public health and the environment.
• Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and external partners.
• Prior experience or demonstrated commitment to working with members of communities directly impacted by pollution.
• Strong work ethic, robust problem-solving skills, and sound judgment.

COMPENSATION
EIP offers competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and a supportive working environment. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and is commensurate with skills and experience. For this position, the salary range is $80,000 - $105,000 at the Staff Attorney level or $105,000 - $145,000 at the Senior Attorney level.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY
EIP is an equal opportunity employer. As an equal opportunity employer, EIP is committed to employment practices that ensure that employees and applicants for employment are provided with equal opportunities without regard to race, color, national origin, ancestry, sex, age, religion, physical or mental disability, medical condition, veteran status, marital status, pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, genetic information or any other factor that is not related to the position.

Company Description:
Our mission is to protect public health and our natural resources by holding polluters and government agencies accountable under the law, advocating for tough but fair environmental standards, and empowering communities fighting for clean air and clean water. EIP was founded in 2002 by Eric Schaeffer, the former director of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Office of Civil Enforcement. Schaeffer resigned in protest when the Bush White House interfered with efforts to reduce harmful pollution from coal-fired power plants, and he dedicated EIP to the principle that politics should never get in the way of enforcing our environmental laws. EIP is a national organization with strong ties to frontline communities and organizations in places like the Gulf States, Ohio River Valley, and the Mid-Atlantic region. We are dedicated to reducing the enormous amount of climate, air, and water pollution generated by the fossil fuel power sector and industries that extract, store, or process oil or natural gas to make fuel, chemicals and plastics, fertilizers, and other petrochemical products. These same industries surround low income and communities of color, exposing residents to unhealthy concentrations of carcinogens, smog forming chemicals, sulfur compounds, and other pollutants. EIP work also targets pollution from other sectors, including steel manufacturing, landfills and trash incinerators, and aluminum production. EIP’s Center for Applied Environmental Science (CAES) ensures that local communities and environmental advocates have access to high-quality science and engineering expertise. By providing this access, which is a critical element in permitting and siting decisions, legal challenges, and rulemaking efforts, we support disproportionately impacted communities as they seek more power to influence environmental decisions that affect their health and quality of life.
