Live Oak, Fla. - U.S. Senate candidate Kendrick Meek held an economic roundtable with North Florida business owners and professionals today to discuss the state of the local economy. At the meeting, Kendrick also discussed his plans for bringing jobs to Florida and diversifying the state's economy.
"Today, I heard from business owners and local leaders who told me that North Florida's economy is still stuck in neutral. As the rest of the country is recovering from the current recession, Florida is being left behind. With Florida is still facing record levels of unemployment, it is now more important than ever that Florida has leaders who will work tirelessly to build a diverse and sustainable economy of the future. In the senate, I will continue to work hard to make this dream a reality for families here in Live Oak and across Florida," said Kendrick Meek, candidate for U.S. Senate.
Last week, the Florida's Agency for Workforce Innovation announced the state's unemployment rate rose to 12.2 percent in February while the national unemployment rate remained at 9.7 in the same month. Preliminary unemployment figures show that unemployment rose to 12.4 percent in Suwannee County in January.
Kendrick's stop in Live Oak is part of a series of statewide visits occurring this week. Kendrick is focusing on jobs as he visits communities throughout Florida as part of his Jobs for Florida Tour. Other stops include a visit to St. Lucie County's Green Collar Training program, a discussion with Gainesville students facing a bleak job market upon graduation, and a tour of a phosphate processing plant in Mulberry.
