Miami Gardens, FL - With the nomination of Elena Kagan sure to reopen the national discussion on a woman's right to privacy, and with Governor Crist still unsure of whether to veto HB 1143, a mean-spirited measure requiring pregnant women to pay for an ultrasound before obtaining an abortion, Kendrick Meek stands alone as the lone pro-choice candidate running for the U.S. Senate in Florida.
"Kendrick's two Republican opponents do not stand up for values of choice and privacy," said Kendrick Meek spokesman Adam Sharon. "Choice is a woman's right that Kendrick has always fought for - a conviction that Governor Crist and Speaker Rubio do not support."
"Sitting on Governor Crist's desk is a draconian anti-privacy, anti-woman bill that deserved his veto the moment it passed the legislature. But the bill has sat on the governor's desk for 13 days untouched. At this point, should Governor Crist finally do what's right and veto the bill, it will be a political decision, not one borne out of personal conviction. Speaker Rubio is a strong supporter of this anti-privacy measure and supports government intrusion into the lives of women and their families. Governor Crist and Speaker Rubio disagree with Kendrick - both Republicans oppose a woman's right to choose," Sharon added.
A long time supporter of choice, Kendrick received a perfect score from NARAL Pro-Choice America in 2009.
In their December 2009 endorsement of Kendrick, President Nancy Keenan of NARAL Pro-Choice American stated: "Rep. Kendrick Meek represents a great opportunity for a pro-choice pickup in the Senate. It is clear that Rep. Meek will be a Senator who stands up for the values of freedom and privacy. He brings a distinguished record of support for a woman's right to choose to this race. Without question, voters in Florida will have a clear choice, regardless of which anti-choice candidate Meek faces in the general election."
Meek will now face two anti-choice candidates in November, Republicans Charlie Crist and Republican Marco Rubio.
