Over 10,000 Floridians Sign Kendrick Meek's Petition to Ban Offshore Oil Drilling (196 hits)

Miami Gardens, Fla. - Today, the Kendrick Meek for Florida campaign announced that 10,681 Floridians signed Kendrick Meek's petition to stop the expansion of drilling off Florida's beaches. While Governor Crist was for drilling near Florida beaches before he was against it, and Speaker Rubio still supports drilling that endangers Florida's beaches, Kendrick is the only major candidate in the U.S. Senate race who consistently opposed an expansion of offshore drilling.

"Over 10,000 Floridians have joined our effort to stop an expansion of drilling off Florida's beaches. The Gulf oil disaster has shown Floridians that our beaches and coastline are just too valuable to be endangered by America's oil addiction. Even when leaders of my own party came out for expanding drilling on Florida's beaches, I stood firm against the policy because I knew the risk for error in Florida was too great. Even my two Republican opponents supported drilling for oil near Florida beaches. Now, after the spill, Florida's beaches and economy must never again be the casualty of the carelessness and neglect of Big Oil companies," said Kendrick Meek, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate.

In the past week, 10,681 Floridians signed Kendrick's online petition to stop an expansion of offshore oil drilling, and the list of signers is still growing. The petition reads, "I stand with Kendrick and oppose new offshore drilling in the Gulf." You can find it here (http://www.kendrickmeek.com/page/s/oilpetition).

Kendrick is the only major candidate in the race to consistently oppose drilling off Florida beaches. When Governor Crist was lobbying for John McCain's vice presidential nomination in 2008, he told Fox News he supported drilling close to Florida beaches (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XUIQNA7lguY). It was only until after the spill that the governor changed his tune.

Speaker Rubio still supports drilling near Florida beaches, even as the oil spill continues to creep toward Florida shores.
