Kendrick Meek to Governor: Sign My Letter to Senator LeMieux Urging Support for Kagan (267 hits)

MIAMI GARDENS, FLA. - Kendrick Meek asked Gov. Charlie Crist to join him in signing a letter to Sen. George LeMieux today that urges LeMieux to support the confirmation of President Obama's Supreme Court nominee, Solicitor General Elena Kagan.

"I stood with President Obama in support Justice Sonia Sotomayor's nomination and stand with him again in support of Elena Kagan's nomination. Will you join me in signing this letter to Senator LeMieux calling on him to support Kagan's nomination?," asked Kendrick Meek, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate.

The letter reads below:

The Honorable George LeMieux
United States Senate
356 Russell Senate Office Building
Washington, DC 20510

Dear Senator LeMieux,

We are writing you today urging you to support Solicitor General Elena Kagan's nomination to the Supreme Court.

Ms. Kagan is a top-notch nominee who will interpret the law of our land faithfully. She is a pioneer in her own right as the first female Dean of Harvard Law School and the nation's first female Solicitor General. Similar to Justice Sonia Sotomayor, another top notch Supreme Court nominee, Solicitor General Kagan brings a unique, real world perspective to the position and understands how judicial rulings impact the lives of ordinary Americans. It is essential that our next Supreme Court justice will respect a woman's right to privacy, including the right to choose. These are just some of the criteria we hope that you will use in fulfilling your duty to advise and consent on this nomination.

Senator LeMieux, you recently wrote a blog post on the Heritage Foundation website which is unfortunately troubling. In evaluating your criteria for a Supreme Court nominee and in detailing the separation of powers, you wrote, "Congress' tendency to expand government power...Healthcare mandates, exponential increases in federal debt, and the recent spate of government bailouts all reflect that, left unchecked, government will expand into every nook and cranny of our commerce and our lives." Based on these comments it appears that partisanship and politics will color your opinion of this eminently qualified nominee. This is worrisome.

Although you were appointed to the senate after Ms. Kagan was nominated to serve as Solicitor General, her confirmation vote was a bipartisan one. We urge you to stand tall as one of those bipartisan voices in support of our president and his nomination of Kagan to the Supreme Court.

Sincerely,

Kendrick B. Meek
