MIAMI GARDENS, FLA. - Kendrick Meek, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, issued the following statement today as Senate Republicans prepare to go down fighting, defending the Big Banks and BP during the final debate on holding Wall Street accountable and raising the liability cap on oil companies for corporate negligence.
"Floridians are fed up with politicians who consistently side with Big Banks and Big Oil at the expense of middle class families. Since day one, I have fought to put Florida families back in the driver's seat, but Senate Republicans continue to defend Wall Street and BP at all costs. Whose side are they really on? We deserve leaders who don't turn their backs on middle class Floridians," said Kendrick Meek.
Over the past week, Senate Republicans made multiple attempts to weaken Wall Street reform by loosening consumer protections and carving out exemptions for Big Banks. Additionally, Republicans moved to block legislation that would hold BP and Big Oil companies accountable. In their most shameful act yet, Senate Republicans have twice blocked passage of legislation introduced by Senator Nelson to raise the liability cap on oil companies and ensure that BP and other polluters are held responsible for the costs of their mistakes. By blocking the legislation, Republicans show who they are truly standing up for and that they are willing to leave taxpayers on the hook for oil spill bailouts.
