Meek Celebrates Prescription Aid Coming To Over 500K Florida Seniors As Part of Heatlh Care Reform (350 hits)

MIAMI GARDENS, FLA. - As President Obama will host a "tele-town hall" with seniors later this morning, Kendrick Meek celebrated the relief coming to nearly a half-million Florida seniors starting this week as part of health care reform enacted this spring. Kendrick is the only candidate in this race who fought for President Obama's comprehensive health care reform effort while both Governor Crist and Speaker Rubio want to repeal the bill.

"Beginning this week, thousands of Floridians will get some relief from the climbing costs of health care coverage. Each year, more than a half-million Florida seniors fall into the Medicare 'donut hole'. Starting this week those Floridians will start to see that gap close and receive rebates. While I fought big insurance companies and supported President Obama's health care reform, both Governor Crist and Speaker Rubio opposed health care reform and still support its repeal. We can't let this happen. I will continue to fight for Florida seniors and middle class families instead of big health insurance companies," said Kendrick Meek, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate.

Each year, over 565,000 Florida seniors fall into the Medicare Part D "donut hole" that forces them to pay for prescription drug costs out of pocket. This week, seniors in this gap will begin to receive rebate checks. Thanks to health care reform, the donut hole will close once and for all in 2020.

Kendrick is the only candidate in this race who consistently supported and fought for the historic health care reform bill. Both Speaker Rubio and Governor Crist stood against the health care reform bill. The governor even went so far as to publicly call on Kendrick to side with big insurance companies and oppose this important reform. On Sunday, Kendrick received the endorsement of the Alliance for Retired Americans, which highlighted Kendrick's fight for health care reform that puts Florida seniors first, not health insurance companies.
