Miami Gardens, Fla. - U.S. Senate candidate Kendrick Meek responded to today's news that Florida's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 11.7 percent in May.
"Today's jobs numbers are a sharp reminder that too many Floridians are still struggling to find work. Although we're turning the corner from recession to recovery, it is clear that much more work needs to be done. One thing is certain: we cannot afford to return to same old tired Republican policies of the past that drove our economy into the ditch in the first place. The days of defending Big Oil, the Big Banks, insurance companies, and credit card companies are over."
"The BP Oil Spill has only added fuel to the fire and threatens up to 195,000 jobs and $11 billion of our state's economy this year alone. Sadly, too many of our state's leaders took the side of BP and Big Oil by enthusiastically supporting offshore drilling, even as close as 5 miles off Florida beaches and blocking attempts to hold BP accountable to Florida coastal residents and businesses."
"My fight now is the same as it has always been: to stand up for middle class Floridians against the special interests. I refuse to stop working until unemployed Floridians are able to find jobs again."
