MIAMI GARDENS, FLA. -- The Kendrick Meek for Florida campaign unveiled a clock on its website (http://www.kendrickmeek.com/) counting down the days until Jeff Greene must file the personal financial report mandated by federal law. Greene has already missed one deadline to release this mandatory data and repeatedly refused to release his tax returns - something every other candidate in the race has done.
"More than two months after announcing his campaign, Floridians still haven't the slightest idea who Jeff Greene is. Few know he is a billionaire who made his fortune wrecking the middle class using what Warren Buffett called 'financial weapons of mass destruction.' And at every step, Jeff Greene has withheld any information about his checkered past, wealth and dangerous investments -- the very things Greene is using to win votes in his TV ads. Floridians deserve to know how Jeff Greene became a billionaire by betting against middle-class homeowners and wrecking the middle class," said Adam Sharon, Kendrick Meek for Florida communications director.
The Miami Herald reported in June that Greene did not file his personal financial disclosure form and was forced to ask for an extension on his previous deadline. It also reported that, "unlike his U.S. Senate rivals, Democrat Jeff Greene -- who reaped millions off the subprime mortgage market that helped wreck Florida's economy -- is not releasing his tax returns." Is Greene's reluctance to disclose any financial information just the tip of the iceberg? Floridians deserve to know who Jeff Greene is.
The Herald article gave some clues, "Forbes magazine estimated Greene's net worth last year at $1.25 billion. The real estate tycoon invested in `credit default swaps' that amounted to insurance against bundles of risky subprime mortgages. Greene moved to Florida only two years ago and has been spending his own money rapidly to raise his profile among Democratic voters. He was previously registered to vote in California without a party affiliation."
Jeff Greene's second deadline to file his personal financial disclosure form is July 23.
