With the Aug. 24 primaries approaching, candidates are making the rounds.
Jeff Greene, the billionaire real estate tycoon who's stormed into the U.S. Senate race in recent months, is scheduled to make his first public remarks in Northeast Florida to the Jacksonville Young Democrats today at 6 p.m. at the Mudville Grille on Beach Boulevard.
Greene's top competitor in the Democratic primary, U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek, has placed a heavy emphasis on Jacksonville in his campaign. He called Jacksonville "a city of true commerce" because of its port and transportation grid during a meeting with The Times-Union's editorial board last week.
He said it's unfortunate a lot of candidates don't see the same value.
"A lot of folks, politically - especially the Democrats - said 'Jacksonville is a nice place, you'll get X amount of votes there, but it's not necessarily someplace you'd go when you're running for the Senate,'" Meek said.
"Jacksonville and Pensacola have been left out of this whole discussion on statewide representation," he continued. "I-10 really doesn't have a dog in this fight, to be honest with you. Everyone is running south of I-4."
