MIAMI GARDENS, FLA. -- Showing Floridians that he is the only Real Democrat in Florida's U.S. Senate race, Kendrick Meek handily won the third primary debate. From opposing the privatization of Social Security to expanding access to health care among all Floridians, Kendrick was the only candidate in the debate that has never run for office as a Republican. The debate, moderated by WKMG anchor Lauren Rowe, was hosted by Florida Press Association, Leadership Florida, and WKMG and will be broadcasted statewide.
"I am the only Real Democrat running for U.S. Senate, and I am thrilled that the entire state will be able to see the clear differences between myself and my opponent," said Kendrick, a former Florida Highway Patrolman. "Floridians need real leadership and I do not accept a scenario where we are stuck with three Republicans debating each other during a general election debate. I am the only candidate in the primary and in the general election that will stand up for the middle class, create jobs, and bring investments into our state. Newspapers across the state recognize that I am the best candidate and have endorsed my campaign. This campaign started with 120,000 Floridians putting me on the ballot, and yesterday many Floridians came out to cast votes for me. When Real Democrats vote early, Real Democrats win elections. All of our hard work won't make a difference if we don't get people to the polls. Tomorrow the Real Dem Express rolls on to Tampa, St. Petersburg, Bradenton and Sarasota, and I am looking forward to seeing more old friends and making some new ones along the campaign trail."
The Real Dem Express Bus Tour started with a rally in Orlando, where Kendrick, his wife Leslie, and his two children were introduced by U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson, Democratic congressman representing Orlando.
The tour made stops in Sanford and Daytona en route to Jacksonville, where Kendrick celebrated President Obama's birthday with Democrats at an Organizing for America phone bank and met with Jacksonville young Democrats at a local restaurant.
The Real Dem Express then traveled across North Florida, including stops in Monticello, Tallahassee, Marianna, Chattahoochee, Pensacola and Washington County for the annual Possum Festival this past Saturday.
The bus made stops in Ocala and The Villages on Sunday. Yesterday, Kendrick and his wife Leslie traveled to Miami to participate in the first day of early voting for the August 24 primary.
After the debate, Kendrick will ride the Real Dem Express throughout Central and Southwest Florida. The Real Dem Express tour will then travel through the Treasure Coast and Palm Beaches. The Real Dem Express will finally end at a hometown rally in Miami on Saturday, August 14. You can view the entire schedule here.
