Harris-Stowe State University invites alumni, students, faculty, staff and the St. Louis community to come celebrate Homecoming 2010: “Love, Liberty, and Legacy — Always Remembered, Never Forgotten,” taking place September 24-October 2, 2010.
Homecoming will begin September 24, with the Kickoff, an annual tradition, at noon in the Emerson Performance Center (EPC). HSSU’s seven National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) teams will be introduced, and the Marching Hornets, Honeycomb Majorettes Dance Team and Flag Corp. will perform. Following, the Chili Bowl will commence, complete with various types of chili, refreshments, an intramural flag football game and powder puff game between the women of the Student Government Association and the women of the Majestic Assembly.
The HSSU Players theater group will present Till Karma Do Us Part, an original play, full of laughs and romance, on Friday, September 24, at 8 p.m. and Saturday, September 25, at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. in the Emerson Performance Center Bank of America Theatre. Please call (314) 340-5975 for tickets.
Homecoming will also be a spiritual experience with events sponsored by HSSU Campus Ministries, which include a Prayer Breakfast on September 25, at 10 a.m. in the EPC, HSSU Saturday Night Live Gospel event at 7 p.m. in the Dr. Henry Givens, Jr. Administration Building (HGA) Main Auditorium, and a Worship Service on September 26, at noon, also in the HGA Main Auditorium.
Harris-Stowe’s Student Government Association (SGA) has some exciting events planned, such as Karaoke Night, Ice Cream Social, All-Greek Picnic, Non-Greek Stroll Off and of course, the Homecoming Student Dance. Miss HSSU Amber Mitchell and Mr. HSSU Larry Young and the rest of the Majestic Assembly will be crowned directly preceding the dance at the African-themed Coronation.
The pinnacle of Harris-Stowe’s annual Homecoming celebration is, of course, the Homecoming Parade, which, this year, takes place on Friday, October 1, at 10 a.m. Special parade performances and appearances include the St. Louis Rams Cheerleaders, Fred Bird, the HSSU Honeycombs, HSSU Marching Hornets, HSSU Flag Corp., nine local high school bands and 10 marching units. Johnny Furr, Jr., Anheuser-Busch Inc. vice president of Community Affairs and Consumer Outreach, will serve as the grand marshal. Homecoming wouldn’t be complete without bringing home its alumni. The HSSU Alumni Association is hosting a multitude of Homecoming events, which are open to everyone. New this year, there will be a Sunday Stroll Car Show and Family Fun Day on September 26, 1-5 p.m. in the EPC parking lot and will include field games, barbecue and a car show with prizes.
On October 2, Homecoming will conclude with the HSSU Alumni Association’s 12th Annual Gold Gala Scholarship Dinner Dance, at 6 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. The evening features a silent auction, a delicious meal and dancing. This year, it’s a class reunion theme; all classes with graduation years ending in a five or a zero will be honored at the formal occasion.
