Harris-Stowe State University's College of Education has received reaccreditation by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE’s) Unit Accreditation Board met recently to determine the accreditation status of 50 institutions, and that accreditation, without any provisions or conditions, has been continued for the professional education unit at Harris-Stowe State University!
"These external review processes provide a fair and accurate assessment of the institution's viability in producing quality educators through programs that meet the highest of standards in candidate knowledge, skills, and dispositions; assessment; clinical experiences and field placements; diversity; faculty pedagogy, scholarship and service to the profession; and overall governance of the professional education unit," said Dr. LaTisha Smith, dean of the College of Education. "... This process helps to ensure that institutions are providing future classrooms with top-notch candidates to meet the growing needs and challenges of 21st century classrooms. Being reaccredited by NCATE is a huge accomplishment. It provides current and future students, employers, districts and the greater community with an affirmation that Harris-Stowe State University is living up to its College of Education’s mission, to produce 'Effective Teachers for a Diverse Society.' …NCATE’s 'stamp of approval' continues to validate what we do at Harris-Stowe and our right to claim our position as a front-runner in the preparation of the nation’s finest educators."
To prepare for this reaccreditation, College of Education Dean Smith and Dr. Linda Kleemann, director of NCATE/DESE and Unit Assessments and assistant professor of Education, led the campaign with assistance from the HSSU Board of Regents, faculty, professional and support staff, and students.
Harris-Stowe's Education programs have been accredited by NCATE since 1954 and include Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Middle School Education, and Secondary Education.
