Alcorn State a finalist for 2013 HBCU of the Year (1622 hits)


President Brown and Distinguished Scholar Evers also among nominees

Alcorn State University is a finalist for 2013 HBCU of the Year. This is the second consecutive year the University has been selected to vie for the top award from the Center for HBCU Media Advocacy. Alcorn is a finalist in seven of the 20 plus award categories. President M. Christopher Brown II is a finalist for Male President of the Year and Distinguished Scholar-in-Residence Myrlie Evers is a finalist for Female Faculty Member of the Year. Alcorn ranks third in overall nominations among historically black colleges and universities nationally.

This year’s awards attracted more than 600 nominations from administrators, students, alumni and supporters of 45 four-year colleges and universities. The nominations reflect Alcorn’s commitment to excellence and its campus accomplishments during 2012-2013 academic year. The Center for HBCU Media Advocacy named Alcorn a finalist in the following awards categories: Best Student Organization — Alcorn State University Diversity Champions Best Alumni Publication — Alcorn: The Magazine Best Research Center — Alcorn State University Center for Conservation Research Best Nursing Program — Alcorn State University School of Nursing Female Faculty Member of the Year — Professor Myrlie Evers Male President of the Year — Dr. M. Christopher Brown II HBCU of the Year — Alcorn State University In the 2013 HBCU of the Year category, Alcorn is competing against Hampton University, Howard University, Fayetteville State University, Saint Augustine’s University, Spelman College, and Winston-Salem State University.

Over the past year Alcorn continued to experience record gains in fundraising, enrollment and alumni participation. The university is also known as a national model for diversity and inclusion, and was profiled on ESPN as the first historically black college in the SWAC to hire a non-black head football coach. “I am particularly pleased to see the HBCU Summit in Jackson, Mississippi,” said Brown who will present at the conference concerning his hiring of the first non-black head football coach in the SWAC. “The Alcorn family is humbled and proud to be acknowledged for the work we are privileged to do.” The annual HBCU Awards applaud HBCU influence on American culture. Historically black colleges and universities from across the country compete in the annual event that recognizes leaders, successful programs and media coverage of those campuses. The public is invited to attend the awards ceremony on June 28 at 6:00 p.m.
