Three of the seven latest books on African American History in Texas and published by Texas A & M University Press in 2013 were authored by TSU professors and graduates. Merline Pitre, Southern Black Women in the Modern Civil Rights Movement, Karen Kossie-Chernyshev, Recovering Five Generations Hence: The Life and Writing of Lillian Jones Horace, and Bernadette Pruitt, The Other Great Migration: The Movements of Rural African Americans to Houston, Texas 1900-1941, are the authors. Also, recent TSU graduate, Maco Faniel, published the fourth text (name and image unavailable) with a trade publisher, The History Press.
“Dr. Pitre is the "queen-pin" in all of this,” said Kossie-Chernyshev. “Her teaching, research, and mentorship inspired us all to pursue "excellence in achievement" at TSU. Dr. Pitre set a high standard that we are all striving to emulate.”
