Alcorn announces Homecoming 2013 game day traffic and parking information (783 hits)

Homecoming is in full swing at Alcorn! As the University prepares to host its fans Saturday, October 5, 2013, for Homecoming activities, the Department of Athletics is working together with the Division of Academic and Student Affairs and campus police to adjust traffic management strategies to improve vehicle and crowd flow for Saturday's game.

"We are working on creating a smoother flow of traffic to insure safety of our alumni, fans and friends attending the game," Chief of Campus Police Michael Storr said. "We're asking for the continued cooperation of all our fans to help with improvements."

According to Storr, beginning at the campus entrance, all traffic will be (one way) coming onto campus off of the Dr. Walter Washington Memorial Parkway (Highway 552) beginning at 6:00 a.m. All open parking is west of the K.L. Simmons Industrial Technology Building. There is no public parking at the main entrance. Patrons seeking open parking areas should be mindful of the traffic flow pattern.

"Additional personnel from MDOT Law Enforcement, Mississippi Highway Patrol and the ASU Department of Public Safety will monitor and help direct traffic to avoid blocked intersections or other problems," Storr explained. "Also, our event operations staff will increase its traffic management presence and response." The University will continue to work with local and state law enforcement in managing game-related increases in traffic to reduce potential bottlenecks.

The Homecoming Parade begins at 10:00 a.m. and the route will start from the area between Revels Hall and Albert Lott Residence Halls. The parade route will be closed at 9:00 AM and traffic will not be allowed to flow west of the K.L. Simmons Technology Building.

Parade participants will enter campus through the back entrance gate using the right lane while traveling the Dr. Walter Washington Memorial Parkway (Highway 552).

Buses will drop off the parade participants at the Bio-Tech and Math and Science buildings and proceed to parking at the RV parking behind the Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium. The Revels Hall’s rear parking lot will serve as headquarters for floats and cars that need to be decorated. All other parade participants will be directed where to park by Campus Police. Questions concerning the parade, contact the Student Engagement at 601.877.6341.

Saturday's game begins at 2:00 p.m., tailgating fans are urged to plan earlier-than-normal morning arrivals to minimize traffic congestion.

Stadium gates will open at 12:00 noon, and the fans are encouraged to plan for an earlier tailgating arrival to minimize traffic congestion. RVs and campers are reminded that unloading and set up times are key in aiding the process and are encouraged to not leave vehicles unattended. Storr also stated the University is asking fans, "to show consideration for others by unloading their items and moving immediately to their parking areas.”

Fans also should be aware of that in compliance with NCAA and Southwestern Athletic Conference regulations, Alcorn State University is responsible for strictly enforcing sideline control for its home football games. At all times, the sideline team area, coaching box and playing field area will be secure and remain secure until the completion of the game.

Additionally, we are implementing a "15 minute cooling off period" immediately following the end of regulation play. Only working staff in uniform and properly credentialed persons will be permitted access to the sideline areas for the first 15 minutes following the game. We thank you for your cooperation as we work to bring you the best Alcorn experience.

Chief Storr stated, “If you have any concerns while on campus, please contact the nearest law enforcement officer or call the ASU Department of Public Safety at 601.877.3000.”
