Kentucky State University president says decision to cut 202 students necessary (731 hits)

Kentucky State University President Mary Sias is standing behind a decision to drop 202 students due to nonpayment.

The State Journal (http://bit.ly/1aXlq7o) reports that KSU President Mary Sias told the Board of Regents last week that the move was necessary.

She said 925 students owed money on Jan. 14 when 813 students were dropped from courses. Most of those students were reinstated after paying their balances or making payments on an installment plan.

Sias says many of those not reinstated by the school owed large sums of money and had low GPAs.

"Those 202 students that were not reinstated had a combined minimum payment balance of $622,061. It's 40 percent of the money that was outstanding," Sias said.

She said the university kept offices open late last week to help students with financial issues.

"Every student had to be dealt with individually, there was no one size fits all, so we had to look at every student's file," she said.

She also noted that the school offers a Green to Gold program to help students pay for school by working on campus.

"We have served 688 students. We made awards of $1.2 million and as we've looked at the data they worked to receive slightly less than $600,000," she said. "I was surprised to see that students left half of that money on the table."
