GSU Valedictorian Aims High, Works Hard, Achieves (4278 hits)

St. Lucia student finds the university to be her foundation for future success

A Grambling State University senior from Choiseul, St. Lucia is starting off on the right track in achieving her educational and career pursuits. Although the road to her success was not always smooth, for there were many bumps and potholes along the way, she reached her destination in grand style by becoming top of her graduating class.

Nadia Johnny, a Marketing major, is the valedictorian of her fall 2014 graduating class. The university’s commencement is scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday in the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center on the campus of GSU. The graduation is free and open to the public.

The St. Lucia native said that hardwork, dedication, and her strong will to never give up were the factors that enabled her to succeed. Moreover, her mother sacrificed by supplementing the funds that were not provided by her student loans. She will always be grateful for this act of love that was shown by her mother.

While at Grambling, Nadia was active in many organizations and received many awards. She was a member of the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA-Grambling Chapter) and American Marketing Association (AMA-Grambling State University) through 2009 to 2010. She consistently received awards from 2009-2014 for remaining on the President’s list as well as receiving a Radiothon scholarship from GSU’s Institutional Advancement and Radio Station, KGRM.

The 2014 valedictorian also worked on campus as a student worker in the technology center at Jacob T. Stewart; in addition, she worked in the GSU library to help her financially along the way. Nadia’s favorite pastime is walking and running on the track with her three year old son, as well as talking with other students in her department about trends and issues in their discipline.

Grambling State University was introduced to Nadia in 2009 from GSU’s international recruiter. Nadia narrowed her decision down to enrolling at GSU and followed the recruiter’s advice. She arrived at Grambling in 2009 and began to feel comfortable with her decision at the university. She wanted the opportunity to experience another culture and to take on a new challenge. Nadia described her time at GSU as good, challenging, and stressful. But she would not have made it without all of her professors and staff helping to further her education.

After graduation Nadia would like to attend Louisiana Tech University to study Finance or Physical Therapy in Ruston, La. After receiving her master’s degree, she said, “I hope to be qualified to work as a financial consultant with my degree in Finance, and I also hope to open a physical therapy clinic in my country”. Nadia would also like to offer some words of advice for future graduates. “Life has its ups and downs, continue pushing through, despite all the negative going on around you” she said.
