North Carolina Central University is now heading down the final stretch of the season, and they'll start by hosting Longwood University at the Durham Athletic Park on Tuesday, April 19 at 6:00 p.m.
NCCU (20-19, 8-7 MEAC) now only has 13 matches remaining in the 2016 campaign, with only six more games to play at the DAP. The Eagles next return home against Duke University on Wednesday, April 27, and then finish the season with a four-game home stretch against Florida A&M University and Charleston Southern University on May 7-8, and 11.
The Eagles took a win at Longwood (22-15, 7-5 Big South) earlier this season as Justice Sampson (Lumberton, N.C.) notched joint league-leading fourth save of the year in a 7-4 victory on Tuesday, April 5.
The power-hitting Eagles are led at the plate by Carlos Ortiz (Cleveland, Ohio) who is hitting .339 with a team-high nine home runs. Ortiz has racked up 36 RBI with nine doubles and two triples, and is slugging .678 over the course of the year. He is second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in slugging percentage and RBI, and he is third in home runs.
As a team, NCCU hit a trio of home runs as it expanded on its season home run record and the Eagles are now tied for 16th in NCAA Division I with 38 total home runs.
Longwood gets most of its run production from Alex Lewis (Burke, Va.) who is hitting .343 and is in the top-10 of the Big South Conference with 33 RBI on 13 doubles and four home runs. Lewis carries a team-high slugging percentage of .521 and he has also gotten himself on base efficiently with an on-base percentage of .391.
Admission to the game, and all remaining home games at the DAP is free, and it will also be carried live on the NCCU Sports Network available at NCCUEaglePride.com. Live Twitter updates will also be available by following @NCCUAthletics.
