Seniors from George Washington Carver High School (CHS) attending an early morning "Senior-Week" breakfast on Monday at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Montgomery, got a surprise 'jolt' when the program started; and it wasn't from the coffee.
It was from money, to be precise, Alabama State University academic scholarship money, which was in the amount of over $160,000 to deserving Carver seniors with high scholastic achievements.
The emissary from ASU bringing the 'gold' to selected Wolverine 'Green and Gold' seniors was none other than ASU President Gwendolyn E. Boyd, who awarded the academic scholarships and also gave the keynote address at the breakfast.
"At Alabama State University, we feel strongly that our nation's youth should be educated beyond high school so as to be prepared for the global economy that awaits them," Boyd said. "The scholarships that we presented to Carver's seniors today will help youth right here in our hometown community do well in life," Boyd added.
At Monday's event, ASU awarded 32 academic scholarships to CHS seniors, as well as presented 'letters of acceptance' to seniors who applied for admission to the University. President Boyd said that Alabama State has plans to conduct similar surprise presentations to seniors at other local high schools, which includes Sydney Lanier, Robert E. Lee, and Jefferson Davis. The University will also do the same at other schools around the state as it did with Carver on May 2, and did late last week at A.H. Parker High School in Birmingham.
Present at this morning's event was Carver High School principal Gary Hall, who said that this type of financial assistance is very important in helping many students be able to attend college.
"The scholarships from ASU presented to some of our best and brightest Carver High School seniors is a blessing from God that will both greatly assist our students wishing to attend college, as well as enrich the already good relationship that exists between Carver High and Alabama State," Hall said.
