ASU Alumnus Sets Up Fake Basketball Contest to Surprise His ASU Lady-Love with a Wedding-Ring
Halftime at ASU vs. Texas Southern Offered a Show to Last a Lifetime
Love was in the air at the Alabama State University vs. Texas Southern men's basketball game on Saturday evening and while the lady in question lost the halftime free-throw contest mid-court, she did win an engagement ring and a husband for life!
While it was not your ordinary college basketball contest, it was one especially constructed by a former ASU basketball star to give his bride-to-be an engagement event that she and a few thousand onlookers were sure to never forget.
LaRue Dobson, Nashville resident and former ASU basketball standout, set-up his girlfriend (Montgomery native and ASU alumna) Valencia Staten for the surprise of a lifetime, which literally made her fall-out on
the floor.
Staten, a 2005 graduate of ASU, thought she was shooting in a free-throw contest "blindfolded" mid-court during Saturday's halftime at the ASU Dunn-Oliver Acadome when it all started. During the pseudo-contest, Staten had a blindfold placed over her eyes while she shot the ball, but rather than landing a basket, she landed a husband.
When she shot the ball (and missed), they took her blindfold off, and when she turned around, she saw her boyfriend of three-years (Mr. Dobson), who is a 1993 ASU graduate, on a bended knee with a big diamond ring in his hand.
When confronted with this surprise, Staten fell to the floor in shock, before rising to accept Dobson’s hand in marriage - and his diamond ring - as the crowd went wild!
Both now reside in Nashville, TN and say that the wedding plans will be announced shortly. Staten did add that she will never again participate in another free-throw contest.
