Suzanne Walsh, deputy director of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Postsecondary Success Team, will deliver the keynote address during Johnson C. Smith University’s 145th Commencement Exercise 8 a.m. on Sunday, May 21, 2017. The event will be held at the Irwin Belk Complex, capping off a year of celebrations around the institution’s sesquicentennial (150th) anniversary. Over 270 scholars will have their bachelor’s and master’s degrees conferred upon them at that time.
A recognized leader in higher education transformation, Walsh has worked with universities, workforce development, immigration and regional economic development. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University and a juris doctorate and a Master of Social Work degree at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Walsh is a member of the World Economic Forum’s Future of the University group, Carnegie Mellon University’s Global Learning Council, as well as education start-up Uncollege.
The University will also hold a Baccalaureate Ceremony for the Class of 2017 on Friday, May 19, 2017, at 6 p.m. in the Jane M. Smith Memorial Church. The guest speaker is Cindy Kent, an evangelist and divisional president for 3M. Earlier this year, Black Enterprise magazine named her one of the 100 Most Powerful Women in Business.
