The star from television's "A Different World,” Charnele A. Brown, will have a 'chat' with Alabama State University students when she hosts a “Real Talk” seminar, which takes place this Thursday (Nov. 16), at 11 a.m. at ASU’s John Garrick Hardy Student Center Ballroom.
The event is free and open to the public.
Brown, who played Kimberly Reese on one of the most successful and watched TV shows that aired between 1987-1993, will talk to students about her life in the entertainment industry, and how students and the public can prepare themselves professionally. Also at the event will be Dr. Marc Williams, a pioneer in sports marketing, as well as a pop culture expert, educator, author, filmmaker, community activist and a former student athlete at North Carolina A&T State University; who will lead the questions and answers portion of Brown's discussion.
“Her talk will be against the backdrop of our Creative Hustle Fair, Part II, which will allow our student entrepreneurs to showcase their wares and services,” says Dr. Davida Haywood, vice president of ASU's Student Affairs.
An East Hampton, New York native, Brown made her acting debut on Broadway in 1989, as the first American member of the iconic South African musical titled “Sarafina!.” Other Broadway credits that she has includes “The Trials and Tribulations of Stagger Lee Brown,” “The Lord's Will,” “Sister's” and “My Diary." She had recurring roles on TV’s “Living Single,” “Martin” and “Girlfriends.” Brown performed on the big screen, Hollywood hit, titled “How Ya Like Me Now?”
She studied acting at the University of New York, and she now lives in Houston, where she is preparing to open the Charnele A. Brown Acting School. She hopes to harvest a new generation of actors and entertainers from what she calls “a true mecca of burgeoning entertainment.”
