Birmingham's New Mayor to Speak at Alabama State University's Dr. King Convocation (2741 hits)


The youngest mayor elected in the modern history of Birmingham speaks at ASU to honor Dr. King.

WHEN: Jan. 18 (Thursday) @ 11 a.m.
WHERE: The ASU Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

The newly elected mayor of Birmingham, Ala. - Randall Woodfin - will be the guest speaker for Alabama State University's annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Convocation on Jan. 18 (Thursday) at 11 a.m. in the ASU Dunn-Oliver Acadome. The event is free and open to the public.

Woodfin is the youngest elected mayor of Birmingham in its modern history after winning the October 3, 2017 runoff against incumbent Mayor William Bell. He previously served as an assistant city attorney for the City of Birmingham and as the president of the Birmingham City Schools Board of Education from 2013-15.

Born and raised in Birmingham, Woodfin attended Shades Valley High School and Morehouse College, where he majored in political science and served as the president of its Student Government Association. He went on to earn his law degree from the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University.

Upon graduating from law school, Woodfin served with the city's Division of Youth Services, the Birmingham City Council and the Jefferson County Committee for Economic Opportunity.

Woodfin serves as a board member of other community organizations, including the Alabama Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, Birmingham Botanical Gardens and the Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama. He is a former board member of Birmingham Change Fund, American Red Cross, Birmingham Education Foundation, Birmingham Cultural Alliance, and past-president of the Birmingham chapter of the Morehouse College Alumni Association. Woodfin is a graduate of Leadership Birmingham class of 2014, Leadership Alabama class of 2016, and served as a featured speaker at TEDx Birmingham 2017.
