ASU Announces 2018 Black History Month Schedule (1160 hits)


ASU's 2018 Black History Month schedule features a full slate of events for students, faculty, staff, alumni and the community.

The diverse schedule of campus programs, events and lectures will help motivate, inspire and enlighten the entire ASU community in honor of Black History Month.

This year’s Black History Month national theme is "African Americans in Times of War.”

ASU’s complete Black History Month schedule is as follows:

February 5-9
Art Exhibition
“Why We Fight: African Americans at War”
8 a.m. - 5 p.m. | Levi Watkins Learning Center (LWLC) Art Gallery
Art exhibition featuring ASU students. The exhibit will feature pieces relevant to this year’s national theme.

February 6-9
Founders’ Week

February 7
Film Screenings
“Red Tails” | Pre-film talk by Joseph Caver
6 p.m. | LWLC Lecture Hall

February 9
Founders’ Day Convocation
Featuring speaker Thomas W. Dortch, Chairman of the Board of 100 Black Men of America, Inc., and the presentation of the 2018 Spirit Awards recognizing notable alumni. Campus processional begins at 9:15 a.m. Convocation begins at 10 a.m. | Dunn-Oliver Acadome

February 13
Black History Month Convocation

February 14
The Midday Date: Coffee & Convo

6 p.m. | LWLC Lecture Hall

February 15
African Americans in the United States Military: Why They Served
11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. | The National Center, 1345 Carter Hill Road

February 21
Film Screenings
“Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution” | Pre-film talk by Dr. Allen Stewart
6 p.m. | LWLC Lecture Hall

February 27
African-American Art Songs and Spirituals Concert
7 p.m. | Recital Hall of Tullibody Music Building
Free and open to the public.
The collection of art songs and spirituals by African-American composers offers faculty and student singers and performers from the Department of Music a rich trove of fresh new repertoire to present to the audience.

February 28
Mrs. Gilmore: A Woman Who “Put Her Foot In It” For Freedom
Noon - 1 p.m. | LWLC Art Gallery
This event will highlight the story of Mrs. Georgia Gilmore, a civil rights activist who cooked for the movement. Attendees will hear from Dr. Valda Montgomery and Nelson Malden, two friends of Mrs. Gilmore's who can attest to her role in the Civil Rights Movement. They also will have the opportunity to sample delicious pound cake made from Mrs. Gilmore’s recipe.
