Local Research on Breast Cancer, Viruses, Heart Disease, Forensic Crime at Alabama State University (963 hits)

Localize a news story on how local research is aimed at fighting diseases, combating murder through forensics & much more. The Symposium will also allow student-scholars to present research and inspire others in their future STEM endeavors.

WHEN: March 14-15
WHERE: ASU's John Garrick Hardy Student Center, second floor (across from the Dunn-Oliver Acadome).

Get your "science-on" and do a news story about how local research is aiding in the fight to combat heart disease, cancer, investigating forensic crime scenes, as well as a whole range of other topics from the very scientists who are conducting this groundbreaking research.

Your news story on these and many other topics (see below) may be easily reported on in one venue as Alabama State University’s College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (C-STEM) hosts its annual 2018 Research Symposium from March 14-15 at ASU's John Garrick Hardy Student Center (second floor).

Over 80 scientific abstracts from 29 states and three foreign nations will be presented about recent research achievements, ongoing research projects and future research plans. The theme of the symposium is "Toward Excellence in STEM Research."

“We are excited to have received more than 80 abstracts from 29 institutions in 10 states including Texas, Georgia, Louisiana, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Kentucky, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Alabama, and three other countries (France, Italy, and China),” said Dr. Harvey Hou, symposium steering committee member and professor in ASU’s Department of Physical/Forensic Sciences. “In addition to a large number of presentations from students, there are more than 20 talks given by professors and scientists. These talks cover the recent important scientific progresses and discoveries including energy science, biomedical science, nanotechnology, cancer biology, environmental sciences, and other STEM disciplines.”

Selected Hot Topics presented at the Symposium include:
1. Photosynthesis and Energy Sciences: by Dr. Kevin Redding (Plenary Speaker, Arizona State University), Dr. Barry Bruce (University of Tennessee at Knoxville), Dr. Wei Zhan (Auburn University), Dr. Bridgette Barry (Georgia Institute of Technology), Dr. Gary Hastings (Georgia State University), and Dr. Harvey Hou (ASU).

10. Mathematics and Computer Sciences: by Dr. Balaram Ghimire (ASU) and Dr. Chunhua Feng (ASU).

The annual Research Symposium is increasingly becoming a regional conference and provides an excellent platform for undergraduate, graduate, and research scholars at Alabama State University as well as other institutions to share their research experience to broader audience. The Symposium will inspire the students in their future STEM endeavors and facilitate the collaborations among the faculty members in their respective fields. One of the most important goals of the Symposium is to celebrate the outstanding quality and diversity of faculty, graduate, and undergraduate research during the last year.
