BSU Student Team Uses Technology to Advance Global Environmental Sustainability

(BOWIE, Md.) – A team of five Bowie State University undergraduates studying computer technology presented an invention to detect wildfires in areas prone to major forestry damage, while competing in a national showcase of innovative solutions to promote global environmental sustainability.
BSU Innovators Team
The students, led by BSU computer technology professor Velma Latson, participated in a showcase for historically black colleges and universities called the HBCU Maker & Innovations Showcase, part of the Emerging Researchers National (ERN) Conference in STEM. Each team used the latest technologies to develop inventions, addressing one of the United Nations’ Sustainability Development Goals. They presented their creations to a panel of judges.
Out of the 40 teams that applied, the BSU team was one of 16 selected to present their projects on a national stage. Although the BSU team was not selected as one of the top winners, the students gained invaluable lessons about using their technology skills to solve community problems. The student presenters were: sophomore Jahaziah Benjamin, sophomore K’mar Grant-Smith, sophomore Alhaji Kanu, freshman Alena Latson and freshman Jordan Philp.
