Jackson Hospital to Acquire Alabama State University Student-Art for the Hospital's Permanent Collection (634 hits)

WHAT: Art created by ASU's students will be selected/purchased for Jackson Hospital's permanent art collection.
WHEN: (May 2) at 2 p.m.
WHERE: ASU's Tullibody Fine Arts Center (room 244) on the corner of S. Jackson St. & N. University Dr.

An old saying states that "Art is in the eye of the beholder," and today (May 2), representatives from the Jackson Hospital Foundation will be on the Alabama State University campus to both "eye" and acquire works of art created by students enrolled in ASU's College of Visual and Performing Arts for the hospital's permanent art collection.

Called the "Healing Arts Collection," Jackson Hospital's artwork has acquired a lot of public recognition for the outstanding collection of original paintings, sculptures and multi-media works of art, which it has purchased during the last few years. Now it is looking to its neighbor, ASU, to purchase art created by its students.

The president of the Jackson Hospital Foundation, Janet McQueen, along with two judges from its Foundation's Board will critic and select from one to two paintings to add to the hospital’s unique art program that turns its hallways into a 24-hour art museum, said Elana Hagler, assistant professor in the ASU Department of Visual Arts. The selection process will take place at 2 p.m. in the ASU Painting Studio (room 244) that is in the Tullibody Fine Arts Center.

"This opportunity came about due to my personal artistic involvement with Jackson Hospital,” said Hagler. “They already have my painting ‘Tajma’ in their collection, and I recently completed a pastel commission of their longtime administrator, Dr. Don Ball," she added.

Hagler said that while working as an artist on commission for Jackson Hospital, she and members of its Foundation discussed the idea of utilizing some of the exceptional artwork created by the students at Alabama State University, and today (May 2), the concept is reality.

"We are grateful for the Jackson Hospital Foundation's support of our students and hope to continue working together to benefit both our students and Jackson Hospital's patients who have drawn much needed comfort from the art that is found in the hospital's hallways," Hagler said.

About Jackson Hospital Foundation’s "Healing Art Collection"
The Jackson Hospital Foundation’s Healing Art collection has grown steadily since the 2008 acquisition of 15 paintings from the Montgomery Art Guild/First Alabama (now Regions) Bank show and competition. Former Foundation board chairman Laura Harmon and foundation president Janet McQueen secured the placement of these iconic paintings by noted Montgomery artists though the cooperation of both entities.

The two were soon joined in the quest for additional art by Katherine Gayden, whose father, Jimmie Sabel, had also served on the foundation board decades earlier. An artist himself who actively championed the local art community, Sabel envisioned businesses like Jackson Hospital filled with local art. It is a dream that came true with a collection that now numbers more than 260 pieces by 175 artists and photographers in the River Region.

Jackson Hospital received the inaugural Helen Steineker Community Award from the Montgomery Business Committee for the Arts in 2016. The award posthumously honors Steineker, who managed the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra for more than 25 years. Jackson Hospital was honored for its unique program that has turned the hospital’s hallways into an art museum; one that never closes.

While you are visiting Jackson Hospital, please take time to enjoy the Healing Art Collection of original works by Central Alabama artists. Art brochures are available in the main lobby of the hospital to guide visitors to specific artists and favorite pieces. This permanent collection is made possible by tax-deductible donations to the Jackson Hospital Foundation and through the generosity of our featured artists.
