The family of Alvin L. Henry presented Texas Southern University with a check for $110,000 that will go to the Alvin L. and Alfreda Henry Endowed Scholarship. This endowment will be matched by the university, has an expected monetary value of $220,000 and will assist TSU students who meet the endowment’s academic requirements. A $100,000 contribution to the endowment scholarship was presented to the university from the Texas Education Foundation by TEF representative Kerry Brockman and $10,000 was donated by the Henry family. Henry served as a former board member for the organization.
After graduating from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law, Henry was immediately admitted to the State Bar of Texas. He soon joined the Houston City Attorney’s Office where he was the first African American to serve in a professional capacity at City Hall.
The proud TSU Tiger became one of the University’s most active supporters. He was the first President of the TSU National Alumni Association and held that position for several years, he founded and served as the first President of the Maroon and Gray Athletic Club, and chaired the National Alumni Fund Raising Campaigns in 1992 and 1996. Henry was the recipient of several awards from TSU including the Distinguished Alumni Award.
After his tenure at the Mayor’s Office and City Hall, Henry joined Houston’s United Way and worked closely with the United Way of America chairing a National Task Force on Minority Roundtable. In 1985, Henry became President and CEO of Neighborhood Centers, Inc.: Houston’s largest social human services agency. After retiring, he formed Alvin L. Henry and Associates, a Social-Human Services Consulting Firm Boards and was appointed by the Governor of Texas, President George W. Bush, to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission.
