Bennett College Center For Global Studies Awarded Its First Fulbright-Hays Grant (4024 hits)

Bennett College has been awarded an $83,600 Fulbright-Hays grant from the U.S. Department of Education to support a four-week study abroad program in Morocco. It is the first such Fulbright-Hays grant that Bennett has received.

The Bennett program, “Women and Democracy in Morocco: A Global Perspective on Civic Engagement, Leadership, and Women’s Empowerment,” will enable a group of faculty and administrators from Bennett and its affiliated early/middle college to explore the role of women and democracy in Morocco next June 2021. The itinerary was designed by Bennett’s Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant, Sofyan Essarroaui, a native of Morocco.

“This project will elevate and internationalize Bennett’s faculty and administrators’ knowledge of women, activism, and democracy,” said Dr. Anne Hayes, Executive Director of Global & Interdisciplinary Studies. “From our research, we know that Black women activists and Moroccan women activists have a lot in common and much to learn from each other.”

Bennett participants will apply their learnings from Moroccan women activists and leaders through:
• Developing a new course or curriculum design or redesigning an existing course or curriculum,
• Designing a faculty-led study abroad program to Morocco, or
• Developing a creative exhibition that could be a documentary video, a photography exhibit, or a series of drawings, paintings, or mixed media.

Participants will formally present their projects at the Bennett College Moroccan Women and Democracy Symposium on September 29, 2021.

Bennett President Suzanne E. Walsh said, “We are thrilled! Given Bennett’s mission as a women’s HBCU committed to civic engagement and social justice and our long-standing history of global engagement dating back to the 1950s, this is exactly in alignment with our DNA and with our vision for the College.”
