Kendrick Meek on President Obama's Nomination of Solicitor General Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court

Miami Gardens, Fla. - Kendrick Meek today released the following statement following reports that President Obama plans to nominate Solicitor General Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court:

"As the daughter of a public school teacher and a lawyer who defended tenants against powerful landlords, Elena Kagan understands first-hand how laws affect everyday people. Unlike my two Republican opponents, I strongly supported Justice Sonia Sotomayor's nomination to the Supreme Court. Like Justice Sotomayor, Kagan is a top-notch nominee who will interpret the law faithfully and put our Constitution first when making decisions.

"As the first woman dean of Harvard Law School and the nation's first woman Solicitor General, Kagan is a pioneer in her own right who is driven by clear thinking, not ideology. Her judicial temperament, intellect, and ability to bridge opposing viewpoints and build consensus make her a fitting choice to replace Justice Stevens.

"I look forward to a thorough, timely, and fair hearing in the United States Senate on her nomination."
